Much of the history of the bridal garter dates back to 14th century Europe. In those days it was considered lucky to have a piece of the brides clothing. In France wedding guests would even rush the alter and begin tearing apart the bride's dress. This did not make the bride very happy so she started to throw pieces of her clothing to the guests to appease them. One of the items she would toss was her garter. She would toss her garter to the men at the wedding, unfortunately, often having drunk too much, they did not always want to wait for her and they would rush her to get it. This did not make the groom happy so he took over the task of removing the bridal garter and tossing it.
The garter is usually worn over the right leg, just above the knee. This seems to be the most comfortable spot. Many brides choose to have a garter set, consisting of 2 garters, 1 to toss and 1 for a keepsake. The more detailed and elaborate garter is the keepsake garter, while the toss garter is smaller and less detailed. Todays wedding reception should be tailored to fit your style and personality and many brides are choosing to forgo the toss. Whichever you pick, choosing your garter is a fun time for you and anybody else you want to help you.
While you can purchase a garter in just about any color or style many brides love the old traditional saying of "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue".What better way to incorporate this wonderful tradition into your wedding than by the delicate blue ribbon in our Embroidered Wedding Garter Set or our Classic Garters?
